How To Draw Like Charley Harper
If you lot follow me on Instagram, and so you've seen me share my teacher sample of this Charley Harper-inspired lesson. I filmed the demo a calendar week or more ago...and finally got around to editing information technology and posting it to my YouTube channel. My program is to do a serial of woodland animal videos inspired by Harper...we'll come across how many I manage to consummate. I have a tendency to exist a pokey lil puppy.
Only enough about that, let'due south get to the lesson video:
Now, like I said, this is the second in a series of Harper-inspired lessons. In case you lot missed it, the other lesson is a mash-up of van Gogh's Starry Night and Harper. You tin can find it here. In this lesson, I'g using the aforementioned supplies as I did in the raccoon project. Here's the list:
*Faber-Castell Oil PastelsFull disclosure: I work with Faber-Castell oftentimes and create lessons for them using their supplies. That being said, I practice enjoy their oil pastels for a couple of large reasons: they are sturdy. Dissimilar many other oil pastels I utilise, they don't break as often. They don't roll! I love that we aren't constantly chasing later on them rolling off the tables. AND they are big...some oil pastels are very small and hard to agree for my students. Not to mention, they vesture through them quickly. For all those reasons...and the fact that the colors are fabled...I would definitely recommend these oil pastels.
*Brown Watercolor PigmentThis is for the light wash used on the raccoon.
*Texture Rubbing Plates or Burlap Don't have texture plates? Burlap makes for a corking rubbing surface!
*Structure PaperI dearest Tru-Ray because the newspaper doesn't fade and seems stronger than near.
* Tempera CakesMy new favorite discovery: painting with tempera cakes on structure newspaper. Similar, whut?! The colors stay true and I just love information technology!
I just had a GREAT couple of questions thrown my fashion after sharing this lesson on YouTube:
Fabulous questions, don't y'all think? Here'due south my response...
May I have a discourse moment? I'one thousand enlightened that there are art teachers who do not like guided drawing teaching. I've grown tired of folks speaking of the correct and incorrect ways to teach art. I'm also super leery of those who speak as though they accept all the fine art teacherin' answers. Hither's a secret: they don't. NONE OF US Exercise. Nosotros're all working with our students everyday, listening to them and trying to figure out how to best teach this amazing creative procedure to them. There are many unlike ways to teach fine art...and information technology's good to dabble in them all. But it'due south no good to put the methods of other art teachers down. Okay, soapbox moment over and out.
I will keep y'all posted on how these Harper-inspired projects progress! Until then...
